ABOUT THE SHOOTING

On April 12, 2013, a shooter opened fire at a satellite campus of New River Community College at the New River Valley Mall in Christiansburg, Virginia. Two women were shot, but survived. According to police reports, the shooter was subdued by an off-duty security guard and two police officers. The shooter lived in Christiansburg and was eighteen at the time of his arrest.

At 1:52 p.m., three minutes before the attack, the shooter posted a threat to the school, including the exact location where the shooting would take place on the anonymous site 4chan, an English-language imageboard known for its users posting violent public threats. However, rather than remain anonymous, the shooter posted his name along with his post: Neil MacInnis.

He was charged with two counts of malicious wounding and two counts of use of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and was held without bond. MacInnis was sentenced to thirty-eight years in prison.
